Mornington Golf Club At A Glance

Course Type: Parkland
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Medium
Best Suited For: Visitors wanting a memorable scenic round without the pressure of a championship layout. Perched above Port Phillip Bay with sweeping water views from multiple holes, this is the ideal choice for a relaxed weekend game followed by a long lunch in the clubhouse. Accessible, beautifully kept, and genuinely enjoyable for all handicaps.

Sitting on one of the highest points in Mornington, every one of the 18 holes at Mornington Golf Club looks out over Port Phillip Bay — a claim very few courses in Australia can make. The course holds a top 47 ranking among Golf Australia’s best public access courses in the country, and the accolade feels earned the moment you reach the 14th tee. From there, a beloved stretch of holes winds down toward the bay and along the water facing Mornington Harbour — a sequence members have affectionately named “Baymen Corner,” a nod to Augusta National’s famous Amen Corner.

In 2017 a new par-3 was carved right into the cliff edge above the bay, giving the course 19 holes in total and one of the most dramatic tee shots on the Peninsula. Pure couch grass fairways and fast bent grass greens round out an experience that punches well above its green fee. Conveniently located near Mornington town, this golf course is easily accessible while still feeling like an escape from the bustle.

Moonah Links At A Glance

Course Type: Championship Links
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Hard
Best Suited For: Serious golfers seeking a genuine championship test. Moonah Links hosted the Australian Open for a reason — this is bucket-list golf for players who want to measure themselves against one of Australia’s most demanding layouts. If you only play one course on the Peninsula, make it this one.

Moonah Links is home to two championship golf courses that serve very different purposes — and both deliver. The Open Course holds the distinction of being the only golf course in Australia designed and built specifically to host the Australian Open, stretching 6,783 metres from the tips and ranked #98 in Golfweek’s Best 2025 Top 100 International Courses. Experienced golfers should know going in that a typical club-handicapper may need eight extra strokes to match par — the wind alone, which the course is specifically designed to keep in play from every direction, accounts for much of that.

The Legends Course, designed by Ross Perrett and opened in 2003, offers a more measured challenge at 6,315 metres, with strategic bunkering that nods to Melbourne’s famed sand belt and each hole named after a golfing great — from local heroes to Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. Beyond golf, Peppers Moonah Links offers accommodation, a spa, and an acclaimed restaurant, making it a natural base for a multi-day Peninsula trip.

The Dunes Golf Links At A Glance

Course Type: Links
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Medium–Hard
Best Suited For: Golf purists who want an authentic links experience without a private membership. Fast-running fairways, coastal dunes, and strategic bunkering reward thoughtful shot-making over raw power. Pair it with a night at the on-site Links Lodge and you have a proper golf pilgrimage.

The Dunes has held a spot in Australia’s top 25 courses for 15 consecutive years — a consistency that means more than any single-year ranking. Designed by Tony Cashmore across 300 acres of rolling sand dunes in Rye, the 6,459-metre championship course is Victoria’s number one public access course and sits in the top five nationally. It plays like a links course should: the first hole, stroke index 1, features a green guarded by deep bunkers and a “valley of sin” at the front that swallows timid approaches, while hole 5 opens with a blind drive over a towering dune.

The Cups, the on-site 9-hole course, is no afterthought — its 6th hole plays just 91 metres from the back tee and was voted Australia’s best short par 3 under 100 metres, while a second set of tees on every hole means visitors can play 18 genuinely different holes. The driving range here is also the only one on the Peninsula where drivers are permitted. The Links Lodge accommodation makes it easy to stay overnight and wake up to golf at your doorstep. With a welcoming clubhouse and bar, The Dunes is more than just a round—it’s a full golfing retreat in Rye.

Rosebud Country Club At A Glance

Course Type: Parkland
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Medium
Best Suited For: Golfers who can’t choose between two great courses — because at Rosebud you don’t have to. With 36 holes across the North and South courses, this is the perfect destination for a full day on the fairways. Play 18 in the morning, enjoy a long lunch at the clubhouse, and tackle the second course in the afternoon.

Rosebud Country Club offers something rare on the Peninsula — 36 holes across two distinctly different championship courses, both worth your time. The North Course holds a #67 ranking in the Australian Golf Digest 2024–25 national rankings and has hosted serious professional golf, including the DP World Tour Qualifying School and the WEBEX Players Series — the kind of pedigree that shows up in tight, demanding greens and fairways that don’t forgive wayward irons.

The South Course tells a different story: Australian Golf Digest has called it one of the most underrated layouts in the country, a description that tends to make golfers quietly book a second round. At $130 for the North and $110 for the South, playing both on the same visit is one of the better-value days in Peninsula golf. Located in Rosebud, it’s ideally situated for players looking to combine their game with nearby beaches and cafes.

St Andrews Beach At A Glance

Course Type: Minimalist Links
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Medium–Hard
Best Suited For: Golfers who appreciate course architecture as much as the game itself. Designed by Tom Doak — one of the world’s most respected golf architects — every hole here feels carved from the natural landscape rather than imposed on it. A must-play for anyone who finds beauty in restraint.

St Andrews Beach is the work of Tom Doak — the same architect behind Barnbougle Dunes, Cape Kidnappers, and Tara Iti — and it shows in a course that plays as naturally as if the land designed itself. Set near the thundering surf of Gunnamatta Beach and Bass Strait, the course debuted as the 9th best in Australia in 2006 and has held the title of number one public access course on the Australian mainland since opening to visitors in 2009.

The 4th hole, a 197-metre par 3, is widely regarded as one of the most intimidating tee shots on the Peninsula, while the 14th — the most photographed hole on the course — offers a genuine shot at the green in two when the onshore ocean breeze lines up in your favour. The 2nd hole, at just 279 metres, is theoretically driveable, which means every golfer who plays it spends the tee walk negotiating with themselves. That kind of strategic temptation on multiple holes is Doak’s signature.

Bay Views Golf Course At A Glance

Course Type: Public Parkland
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Easy–Medium
Best Suited For: Holidaymakers and visitors who want to squeeze in a round without taking it too seriously. Affordable, welcoming, and true to its name — the views across Port Phillip Bay are genuinely spectacular. A great option if you’re travelling with mixed abilities or simply want a fun, low-pressure afternoon on the course.

Bay Views Golf Course punches well above its green fee. A par-70 layout measuring 5,268 metres, it’s shorter than the Peninsula’s championship courses but carries a slope rating of 127 — enough to keep experienced golfers honest. The course rises to its highest point across holes 12 and 13, where the views across Port Phillip Bay and the southern Peninsula open up dramatically. The 13th, a sweeping dogleg par 5 with a tiny, slick green as its only defence, is the signature hole.

The most memorable stretch to finish the back nine is set up by hole 9, where looking back toward the tee you might catch the Spirit of Tasmania navigating the bay. The 15th’s bunkering has been compared to the Melbourne sandbelt, which for a public course at this price point is a genuine compliment. At $60 for 18 holes and annual membership from $395, it’s the most accessible golf on the Peninsula — and more rewarding than the price suggests. Situated in Rosebud, Bay Views Golf Course combines scenic charm with accessibility.

Eagle Ridge Golf Course At A Glance

Course Type: Parkland
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Medium
Best Suited For: Social golfers, groups, and anyone celebrating a special occasion. Eagle Ridge’s manicured parkland setting, ornamental lakes, and excellent clubhouse restaurant make it as much about the experience around the game as the game itself. It’s also a popular wedding venue — so don’t be surprised if you’re sharing the grounds with a celebration.

Eagle Ridge Golf Course was designed by Kevin Hartley — the 1958 Australian amateur champion, with the ambition of creating the “Royal Melbourne of the Mornington Peninsula”. Eagle Ridge stands out as one of the most picturesque courses on the Peninsula, with lush landscaping, ornamental lakes, and meticulously groomed fairways.

The signature hole is the 6th, a par 3 demanding a carry over a bunker that runs almost the full length of the hole — clear it and the mounding feeds your ball to the green, but the large undulating putting surface will punish anyone who stops reading. The 9th finishes the front nine with a reachable par 5 where the clubhouse lake on the left and a pot bunker at the front of the green keep honest scores honest. Under 16s play free, and the Peninsula Beer Garden on site — local craft beer on tap, live music, Peninsula food — makes it easy to turn a round into an afternoon.

Mount Martha Public Golf Course At A Glance

Course Type: Public Parkland
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Easy
Best Suited For: Families, beginners, and golfers introducing younger players to the game. Mount Martha’s relaxed, approachable layout takes the intimidation out of the experience while still delivering lovely coastal views over Port Phillip Bay. Combine it with a swim at one of Mount Martha’s beaches and you have an easy, enjoyable family day sorted.

Mount Martha Public Golf Course sits on the hills above Port Phillip Bay — and “perched” is the right word, with views opening up across the water from multiple points on the course. The 18-hole par-72 layout plays across couch fairways that consistently surprise first-time visitors with their quality. The greens are maintained to a standard that belies the green fee.

What genuinely sets Mount Martha Golf Course apart from other budget-tier courses is what surrounds the golf: indoor simulators for wet weather days, a summer night golf series, live music on the deck, and free BBQs — the kind of extras that turn a round into an outing. Junior rates start at $14 for 9 holes on a weekday, making it one of the most accessible introductions to golf on the Peninsula, and PGA professional Kom Pertama is on site for lessons and club fitting. No membership required, casual dress, walk-ins welcome.

The National Golf Club At A Glance

Course Type: Championship
Access To Play: Members & Invited Guests Only
Level Of Difficulty: Expert
Best Suited For: Elite golfers chasing the ultimate Peninsula experience. With three world-class courses perched above Bass Strait, The National is pure bucket-list territory. Secure a guest invitation if you can — few courses in Australia can match its combination of drama, prestige, and jaw-dropping cliff-top scenery.

The National Golf Club operates on a different scale to everything else on this list — 72 holes across two sites, Cape Schanck and Long Island, under a single membership founded in 1985 as what its founders called “the new direction in golf.” At Cape Schanck, three courses share the same spectacular coastal terrain but play nothing alike. The Old Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, weaves its fairways between towering sand dunes bordered by tea tree and native coastal vegetation — described by the club as among the more memorable layouts anywhere in the world, which for a course of this calibre is not an idle boast.

Gunnamatta is Tom Doak’s work — the same architect behind St Andrews Beach — here embracing natural cup and bowl undulations and imaginative green shapes that demand short game creativity above power. Moonah, named after the ancient indigenous coastal trees scattered through the property, is built around its par 5s: serpentine fairways, towering dunes, bold accurate play rewarded. At Long Island in Frankston, Gordon Oliver’s layout is regarded as the hidden gem of Melbourne’s sandbelt, its reputation resting specifically on the quality of its greens.

Devilbend Golf Club At A Glance

Course Type: Bushland Parkland
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Medium
Best Suited For: Golfers who want to escape the crowds and play in a genuinely peaceful setting. Devilbend’s tree-lined fairways, abundant birdlife, and friendly community atmosphere make it one of the most underrated courses on the Peninsula. Pair your round with a visit to one of the nearby Moorooduc farm gates or cellar doors for a perfect local afternoon.

Devilbend Golf Club was built the old-fashioned way — born from a public meeting of 80 Hastings locals in 1973, carved from 141 acres, and opened for play on December 20, 1975 after member working bees helped shape the course by hand. Fifty years on, that community effort has been validated: Devilbend was named Victoria’s Most Outstanding Club, Facility and Place to Play (Metropolitan Region) for 2025. The course is built around rolling countryside and a series of dams, with swift greens that reward precision over power.

Two holes in particular define the back nine. Hole 14 is a dogleg right with a genuine dilemma off the tee — attack the corner through trees on the right and you set up a clear approach, but OOB runs the full length of the left. Hole 16 is the psychological counterpart: no hazards anywhere on the hole, yet it plays as one of the hardest on the course — a long, straight, uphill par 4 lined by trees that typically leaves a blind shot into what the club considers its most demanding green. Its location in Moorooduc means it’s close to farm gates and wineries, offering plenty of post-golf options.

RACV Cape Schanck At A Glance

Course Type: Resort
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Medium–Hard
Best Suited For: Golfers who want to make a full weekend of it. Combine a challenging round on an undulating coastal layout with a stay at the resort, spa treatments, and fine dining — without ever needing to get back in the car. The ideal option for couples where one plays golf and the other would prefer a day at the spa.

RACV Cape Schanck Resort sits at the southernmost tip of the Mornington Peninsula, where Bass Strait meets the tidal bay of Western Port. The golf course opened in 1986 as the second of five Australian layouts Robert Trent Jones Jr completed in quick succession, a series that also included Joondalup, Coolum, Meadow Springs, and The National’s Old Course next door. Despite sitting close to the coast, this is more parkland than links in character — defined by enormous greens and large open bunker complexes on all 18 holes.

One green stretches over 70 yards from front to back. Ocean views appear on eleven holes; the front nine plays with a distinctly American resort feel before the back nine opens dramatically at the 11th tee with sweeping sea views across the Peninsula. The par-3 7th is a highlight — a small lake guards the green, demanding a committed carry. Ranked 38th in Australia by the 2025 Golf Course Guide, it’s one of the most accessible high-quality resort rounds on the Peninsula, and the only course here where you can sleep in a villa nestled among the fairways.

The Valley Golf Club At A Glance

Course Type: Residential Parkland
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Easy–Medium
Best Suited For: Social players, casual groups, and visitors staying nearby in Safety Beach who want a relaxed round close to the water. The flat, walkable layout suits all ages and abilities, and the bistro and bar make it easy to linger well beyond the 18th hole. An ideal midweek option when the more popular courses are busy.

The Valley Golf Club has operated on the shores of Safety Beach under a few names over the years — formerly the Safety Beach Country Club and then Mount Martha Valley Course — but the resort it’s become is something distinct from a traditional golf club. The 18-hole course wraps through nearly five kilometres of resort-style grounds, lined with tropical palms and a series of water features that give it a character unlike anything else on the Peninsula.

At par 67 and just over 5,300 yards, it plays shorter than most courses on this list and doesn’t carry the same difficulty rating — but that’s the point. The course winds pleasantly through the surrounding landscape without demanding your scorecard, and the water features keep you honest throughout. What The Valley Golf Club offers beyond golf is what sets it apart: tennis courts, a swimming pool, 18-hole mini golf, and an on-site PGA professional available for lessons.

Flinders Golf Club At A Glance

Course Type: Coastal Links
Access To Play: Public
Level Of Difficulty: Medium–Hard
Best Suited For: Golfers who want coastal drama without the price tag of the prestige courses. Flinders delivers genuine links-style challenges — wind, firm turf, and ocean exposure — in a setting that feels authentically remote. It’s the kind of course locals keep quietly to themselves, making it all the more satisfying to discover.

Flinders Golf Club traces its roots to 1903, when David Maxwell — inaugural club champion at what would become Royal Melbourne — organised a proper club around four rough clifftop holes that cable station workers had already carved into the land. In 1926, Dr Alister MacKenzie visited during the same Australian tour that produced Royal Melbourne’s West Course, and described Flinders as “equaled by only one other natural course, which is in California” — almost certainly a reference to his own Cypress Point.

His most lasting contribution was transforming hole 4, the Coffin, into the short par 4 now regarded as one of the best of its kind in Australia. At 272 metres it reads as harmless on paper — until the first ravine at 150 metres swallows any mishit drive, and a second just short of the green punishes the approach. On Navy training days, cannon fire from the adjacent gunnery adds to the occasion.

Hole 7, Casuarina, is the counterpoint: long, rated among the course’s hardest, demanding two solid strikes to reach a well-contoured green that offers no relief on arrival. Walter Hagen played an exhibition match here in 1935. Coastal breezes and small, punishing green complexes keep the scoring honest — the course plays to a par below 70 — and ranked 57th in Australia’s Top-100 Public Access Courses, it remains one of the most historically significant rounds on the Peninsula.

Beyond the Fairway

Golf on the Mornington Peninsula isn’t just about the game—it’s about the entire experience. Many golf clubs boast excellent restaurants, from fine dining at RACV Cape Schanck to casual meals at Rosebud Country Club. The proximity of golf courses to wineries, hot springs, and beaches means you can seamlessly combine golf with other luxurious activities. Whether it’s sipping wine after a morning round or unwinding at the Peninsula Hot Springs after a full day on the course, the Peninsula elevates golf into a lifestyle experience.

Tips for Your Golfing Trip

Book your tee times well in advance, especially during weekends and peak holiday periods. Most clubs require standard golf attire, so pack collared shirts and appropriate footwear. If you’re traveling light, don’t worry—clubs, buggies, and carts are available to hire at most venues. Driving between courses is easy, with most located within 20–40 minutes of each other, making multi-course trips very achievable.
